Performance Title: Letter Vibrations From Uganda, 2014
Performance venue: Charles Darwin University Theatre, NT
Artist Statement
Is it natural to have people in the world living beyond their necessities while simultaneously others are malnourished living without life’s necessities? Is this understood by human kind yet the consensus is to continue the current dynamics? Or are we all ignorant of the situation? My world is comfortable and nurturing. Necessities are monochrome backdrops, muted by glossy luxuries. Her world though, is splattered with colour as the drips from my muted background drop onto her parallel universe. Primah is my channel to the underworld. Connecting a disoriented soul from a simulated world down to the tangible dirt of reality. We sponsors help the poor although, what we never expected was that the poor would help us.
Out from the envelope words vibrate off the paper into my hands, electrically stimulating my soul. Reality is realised again and the emotions flow like a stream of blue, cleaning the windows in my eyes. This scarce connection glows in my hands, catching tears of joy. Yet insignificance and incapability battle in my head tapping at the door of my heart.
Soft notes flow from the piano keys and cello strings on the air like a quiet ocean bleeding into rivers of ears. Instrumental piece Spiegel im Spiegel - Mirror in the Mirror wraps me in a blanket of time that stands still. Responding to the ocean of sound through the automatism technique, blue on blue, yellow on blue, I strike and drip paint on horizontal paper, flooding it with coloured emotion.
When listening, viewing and feeling in Letter Vibrations from Uganda, the audience has the chance to see the world they live in through new eyes. They might see my simulation and in turn see theirs, they might have a thought or feeling that is unfamiliar and intriguing. The perspective Primah’s letters give me are rare and powerful. Through the performance I hope to share this with others through providing a glimpse into the whirlwind that surrounds me when reading her letters and reflecting on our friendship.
