Artist Statement

Darwin beaches have a particularly large tide range. At high tide the water rushes up past the sand to lick the top of the cliffs and conceals like a blanket. At low tide it recedes considerably revealing a beautifully layered world of sand, rocks and water. I found moving across these three horizontal layers to reach the ocean a truly captivating experience particularly at late afternoon when the sun is clinging to the horizon and projecting it’s last burning light through the sky. In Nightcliff Layers I wanted to convey the experience of the low tide zone. I did this by addressing the common elements each layer shares such as colour, texture, perspective, form and composition. I then hoped to present these elements in a way that the viewer might also see the beauty that I see.
